Karel Appel (Amsterdam, April 25, 1921 – Zurich, May 3, 2006) was a Dutch painter and sculptor in modern art from the second half of the twentieth century, who can be counted among the expressionists. He made his breakthrough with his membership of the Cobra group. The Cobra group was an avant-garde movement of artists from Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands from 1948 to 1951.
